17 DIY T-shirt Cutting Ideas with No Sewing
1. Create a Cold Shoulder Look by Cutting off the Sleeves at the Shoulder Seam
Cold shoulder tops are all the rage right now, and for good reason! They’re perfect for summer weather because they keep you cool while still looking stylish. Plus, they’re really easy to create – all you need is a basic t-shirt and a pair of scissors.
If you want to give your cold shoulder top a more polished look, you can cut off the sleeves at the shoulder seam. This will create a nice, clean line and give your top a more polished appearance. Plus, it’s an easy way to add a little extra style to your outfit.
2. Cut a V-neck Shape into the Neckline of the T-Shirt
To create a V-neck shape, cut a triangular-shaped opening into the neckline of the T-shirt. Make sure to cut the opening wide enough so that it can be easily pulled over your head. If you want a deeper V-neck, you can continue cutting down the middle of the triangle until you reach the desired depth.
I had a t-shirt that the neckline was too tight, so I tried out this technique. To complete I used: scissors, I didn’t have a ruler, so I used an empty milk carton, and a t-shirt.
Step One: fold the t-shirt in half to find the middle for the bottom of the v cut.
Step Two: use your “ruler” to draw where to cut your v neck. I didn’t want a plunging V line. So, I lined my “ruler” with the edge of my neckline and drew my line there. If you want the V to be deeper, line up farther away from the neckline.
Keep in mind that you can always go back and cut more off later.
This line was hard to show since I was using a black pen on a black shirt, but it was enough for me to see where to cut. If this is a problem for you, try using a lighter shirt or chalk to better visualize your cut line.
Step Three: flip the shirt over and line up your “ruler” on the other side in the same way you did on the first side.
Step Four: unfold the shirt and check that the lines match and create the V you’re looking for. Unjust the cut lines, if need be, at this time.
Step Five: cut down the middle of the V that you created from the neckline of the t-shirt. Make sure that you are only cutting the front side of the t-shirt.
Step Six: cut from the bottom of the V, and then along the neckline on the front side of the t-shirt.
Step Seven: repeat on the other side. Cutting from the bottom of the V all the way along the cut line and around the neckline on the front of the t-shirt.
Step Eight: turn the t-shirt over and cut off along the neckline until it’s all the way off the t-shirt.
Step Nine: double check your work. I found this spot that was a little rough and I cleaned up my cut lines.
Step Ten: try on the shirt and see how the V neck fits. The bottom of my V needed a little work and so did the left side on this picture to even out the V shape.
Step Eleven: use your scissors to adjust the places that may need it. Or at this time you could make your V neck deeper or even wider. You could eyeball it or start from the beginning and do a few quick measurements with your ruler. It really depends on how much more you want to take off.
Step Twelve: try your t-shirt on and enjoy your new V neck! Or make more adjustments and you see fit.
3. Cut a Racerback Style by Cutting off the Sleeves and the Bottom of the T-shirt
Cutting a racerback style is simple. Just cut off the sleeves and a little extra around the shoulders. Then cut off around the neckline and cut off the bottom of the T-shirt seam. This will create a wide, scoop neck opening in the back. You can then tie the bottom seam together to create a racerback look. This style is perfect for showing off your summer tan!
This one is a little hard to imagine the steps so, I found this awesome video. Watch as they make the shirt symmetrical by cutting off one side and then the other side by overlaying the first cut.
4. The Off-the-Shoulder T-Shirt Cut
This style is perfect for summer weather! To create an off-the-shoulder t-shirt cut, start by cutting off the neckline (or the seam around the neck). You can cut off right around the neckline or go slightly wider. The wider that you go the wider the neckline will be.
Once you’ve made this cut give the neck part of the t-shirt a little pull to create loosened look. Don’t pull to much or the shirt will be very loose and might even fall off your shoulder when you’re done. Keep in mind that you can always repeat this step after you try on the fit if you find it needs a little more give.
Now, cut the sleeves off, just cutting off the stitching. Give the arms a little pull too so they aren’t tight as well.
Try and the shirt and see what you think. Remember you can pull a little more around the neck and shoulder if needed. This style t-shirt will show off your shoulders and neckline, and it’s perfect for hot weather.
5. Cut a High Low Hemline by Cutting the Bottom of the T-shirt at an Angle
If you’re looking to change up your T-shirt game, why not try a high low hemline? This style is created by cutting the bottom of the front of the T-shirt only, which gives it a more elevated look.
To get started, fold the shirt in half sideways, with the front of the shirt facing forward. Check that the seams at the bottom and side of the shirt are lined up. Then make sure the sure is flat.
Try on the shirt and determine where you’d like for it end in the front and mark it with a marker. Now, cut off the bottom of the T-shirt at an angle. Starting higher at the front and gradually decreasing as you head towards the back. You can either use a ruler to measure and mark the desired length or eyeball it and cut accordingly.
Once you try on the shirt for fit you can always adjust the cut afterwards by repeating these same steps.
6. Cut the T-shirt into a Crop Top by Cutting off the Bottom Half
You can easily turn a T-shirt into a crop top by cutting off the bottom half. This is a great way to recycle an old T-shirt and to create a new, stylish top. Here’s how:
- Place the shirt up to yourself and decide where you’d like to cut it.
- You can mark it with a marker or just eyeball it by folding the t-shirt over where you plan to cut. Most people tend to start around their belly button.
- Put the t-shirt flat on a flat surface with the t-shirt facing you sideways.
- Cut off the bottom half of the t-shirt where you marked or folded the t-shirt.
- If you want the bottom ends to look a little stressed, you can pull the bottom a little to achieve that look.
- Enjoy your new crop top!
7. Create a Draped Vest by Cutting the T-shirt Down the Sides
If you want to create a vest out of an old t-shirt, start by cutting off the sleeves of the t-shirt. Cut off just past the seam. Then cut off the neckline of the t-shirt. Lay the shirt flat and cut from the bottom of the shirt to the armpit on both sides. Next, you can cut of the bottom seam of the t-shirt, or you can leave it on, your choice. Give a little pull around the t-shirt so it will roll up slightly.
Now it’s time to try on the vest. Place both arms through the hole on the shirt (where the neckline was). If the hole is too small, pull around the hole to stretch it out and try again. If the hole is still too small, you can cut the hole bigger. Then give it a little pull so that it still rolls up slightly around the edge. Repeat these steps as needed until it fits comfortably.

14. Cut the T-shirt into an Off the Shoulder Crop Top with Bell Sleeves Style by Cutting the Sleeves and the Bottom of the Shirt
To create an off the shoulder T-shirt with bell sleeves, start by measure approximately 11 inches from the bottom of the t-shirt and mark it. You can go longer or shorter depending on how long you want your crop top to be. Then cut off where you marked the shirt.
Now, cut off the neckline. Then lay the shirt flat, find the middle of the shirt. You can eyeball it or use a ruler. Cut down the middle of the shirt.
You’ll need some elastic to create the bell sleeves. Measure the elastic by placing it around your arm and marking the length needed. Then cut two pieces of elastic the same length for each arm. Now cut an opening in the inside of the seam of each arm. Place a safety pin on both ends of the elastic and push the elastic all the way through each arm. Once completed, even out the elastic by gently pulling on it. Take off one of the safety pins and use the other safety pin to hold both ends of the elastic in place. The safety pin will remain in each arm. If you wish you could glue or sew the two elastic ends together at this time.
To create the top of the shirt, you need more elastic. Take the elastic and measure around the top of your chest and cut the elastic to that length. Cut a small opening on the inside of the seam that was the bottom of the shirt. Attach a safety pin to each end of the elastic and push it through the seam. Once completed, take off one of the safety pins and attach both end of the elastic to the one safety pin. Pull on the elastic to even it out. Again, the safety pin will remain, but you can glue or sew the two elastic ends together instead.
Last but not least, pin both of the arms where the elastic is to the sides of the elastic on the shirt and sew the sleeves back onto the shirt. And there you have it!
