Playing with playdough can be so much fun. There are so many things you can do with playdough! But did you know that you could write your name in playdough, without picking up a writing utensil?
Today I’ll show you how to make a rolling pin with a name on it, that you can roll into playdough or really any dough for that matter. As long as the dough isn’t too sticky. Wait till you see how easy this design is and how much fun your kids will have with it!
What you’ll need:
- Tin foil roll
- Marker or pen
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Playdough
To start you need a tin foil roll. I’m talking about the hard cardboard roll inside of your tin foil. The roll needs to be hard so that you can press your name onto the dough. And all of the other rolls, like paper towel rolls are too thin to make this idea come to life.
Here comes the tricky part, you need to write the name on the rolling pin so that when it rolls it spells the kids name. You need to invert the name so that it rolls out in correct formation. There are multiple side of the rolling pin so, this shouldn’t be a problem if it doesn’t work on your first try.
Once you have the name written on the rolling pin, heat up your hot glue gun, make sure it has enough hot glue and trace over the name with the hot glue. Let the glue dry.
Now, get your dough ready. We used playdough and I rolled it into a ball and then used a traditional rolling pin to roll it flat. The time we’ve been waiting for is here…try out your personalized kids rolling pin!
Like I said previously, if the name doesn’t come out just right on the first try simply peel off the parts of the hot glue that need replacing. Re write those parts or freehand with the hot glue gun. Let the glue dry and try rolling the personalized kids rolling pin again. You can repeat this process until you’re satisfied.
Other Fun Ideas for This Design:
- Use an ink pad and paper. Press the name on the rolling pin into the ink and then roll it onto paper. You could start with everyday paper and then upgrade once you’re comfortable to using it to create the kids card with their name on it. Or even on plain wrapping paper or tissue paper and roll their name onto it for their gifts.
- Roll in paint and then paint their name onto paper. This would be fun to try by painting the name in paint to create a rainbow. Keep in mind this idea will probably not be able to wash off without ruining the tin foil roll.
- If you don’t have a tin foil roll you could get a cheap plastic or wood rolling pin and use that instead. I’d lean towards plastic because then you could clean the rolling pin off more likely when using paint or ink versus when using a wooden rolling pin.
