Do you love wine? If so, you know that it’s important to store your wine in a cool, dark place. A great way to do this is by building your own wooden wine rack! In this blog post, we will show you 2 different ways to build a wooden wine rack for your countertop. This is a simple projects that can be completed in just a few hours. Let’s get started!
Today, I made a stylish 4 bottle rustic looking wooden wine rack from a 1×7 inch wood board and a 2×5 inch wood board, which I bought from a local hardware store costing me approximately $23 in total for all supplies. To assemble I used wood glue and screws. Below is a 10 step tutorial, with step by step instructions you can follow along with.
Tools Needed
- Band Saw or Scroll Saw
- Fine Sand paper
- Miter Saw
- Drill
- Screw Driver
Materials Needed
- (1) 1×7 inch untreated wood
- (1) 2×5 inch untreated wood
- wood glue
- 6 screws
Let’s Begin
Step 1: Start by cutting (2) 11 inch pieces on the 1×7 inch board. These will become the sides of the wine rack. Image below is the outline I used to complete this project.
Step 2: Draw the outline for the sides of the wine rack about 11 inches high and 7 inches wide on the 1×7 inch board. You will need to repeat the process twice, one for each side of the wine rack.
Step 3: Now, cut out the outline for both boards using a band saw.
Step 4: After the outlines are cut, you can start sanding all along the edges using fine sandpaper.
Step 5: Cut a 4 inch long piece from the 2×5 inch board using a miter saw. This will become the base of the wine rack.
Step 6: Sand along the unfinished edges of your 4 inch piece of wood using the same fine sandpaper from before.
Step 7: On the unfinished side of your 4 inch piece of wood put a line of wood glue along on the middle of the wood. Then, do the same on the other side.
Step 8: Align each side of the outlined pieces so they are mirror images of one another. Attach the outlined pieces to each side where you applied the wood glue to initiate the assembly process.
Step 9: Add 3 screws to connect the outline pieces to the 4 inch wood piece. You will do so by drilling from the outside of each outlined piece, drilling into your 4 inch wood piece base. Do this on one side, and then the other.
Here is what it will look like when it is assembled.
Step 10: Apply any type of wood stain on it. Here, I am using a MinWax Wood Finish golden oak colored stain, and then let dry according to the manufacture’s instructions for the wood stain.
Now be ready to enjoy your new DIY wine rack and celebrate by cracking up your favorite bottle of wine!
Another Way to Make Wooden Wine Rack for Your Contertop
Tools and Materials:
You’ll need a few basic tools to complete this project. We’ve listed them below with links to where you can find the best prices on each item. All of these items will ship free if you spend over $35 at Amazon.com or Walmart online! If not, they won’t cost more than $20 for everything combined (plus shipping). I recommend ordering from either Amazon or Walmart because both stores offer great customer service and fast delivery times so that’s always something important when buying anything online! It’s also worth noting that all three items are available in store locations but it might take longer time getting your hands on them by going into brick-and-mortar shops instead of ordering from home via their respective websites.
- Tape measure
- Circular saw or handsaw (I used a circular saw)
- Plywood sheeting, at least 18″x24″
- Ruler or a straight edge
- High-grit sandpaper (optional)
- Stain or paint and brush (optional)
- Wine bottles! 😊
Step One: Measure the Width and Height of Your Countertop The first step is to measure the width and height of your countertop. You will need to know these dimensions in order to buy the right size plywood sheeting. My countertop was 24 inches wide so I bought a piece of plywood that was 25 inches wide x 50 inches long (that way there was an extra inch of plywood on each side which allowed me to trim it down easily later).
Step Two: Cut Your Plywood Sheets Next, you will cut your plywood sheets into the size that you need. I recommend using either a circular saw or handsaw for this step. If possible, ask someone who has experience working with woodworking tools to help you out because cutting through thick pieces can be dangerous if not done properly!
- Use tape measure and ruler/straight edge as guides while making sure they’re lined up straight before beginning any cuts by checking repeatedly along entire length being marked off (this ensures accuracy in final product)
- (Optional) sand edges after completion so there are no sharp edges that could potentially harm someone
- Using a circular saw: make sure blade is properly set to depth of cut, clamp plywood down securely to avoid any movement while cutting, and always wear safety goggles!
- Using a handsaw: same as above but less dangerous because there’s no moving blades involved 😉
Step Three: Assemble the Wine Rack Now it’s time to assemble your wine rack! This step is very easy. All you have to do is use wood glue and nails or screws to attach the sides (A) and top (B) pieces together. Make sure everything is lined up correctly before nailing/screwing in place.
Step Four: Add Bottle Holders Once the main frame of your wine rack is assembled, it’s time to add the bottle holders. This can be done by either using a drill or a saw (I used a circular saw). If you’re using a drill, just make sure the bit size is correct for the thickness of your wood.
- Mark where you want the bottle holders to go on each side of the wine rack
- Use a saw to cut out those marks (again, I used a circular saw)
- Drill pilot holes into each hole before screwing in place the dowel rods that will hold your wine bottles
Step Five: Stain or Paint and Seal Your Wine Rack Now that your wine rack is all finished, you might want to consider staining or painting it. I used a dark stain on my wine rack and then sealed it with polyurethane for protection.
Step Six: Add Wine Bottles to Your Wine Rack Now that your wine rack is finished, it’s time to fill it up! This step can be done by simply adding bottles of wine into each hole until they’re full 😊
